Mark Teixeira had been awful this season against the Angels, so it's a good thing his former team and Yankees had a makeup game last night. Teixeira was a monster in the Yankees' 5-3 victory in The Bronx, delivering three hits and two RBIs, setting up the game-winning rally with a double in the eighth inning and helping to save a run with a terrific scoop at first base. "He had an unbelievable game, offensively, defensively," manager Joe Girardi said, "and he's really done that for most of the year this year."
Teixeira spent the latter part of last season with the Angels after they acquired him from the Braves, and he wanted to return to Anaheim as a free agent. But the Yankees offered him $180 million, and he ended up in pinstripes.
The MVP candidate opened this season a miserable 3-for-25 (.120) against the Angels this season - until breaking through last night.
"I have no idea what I'm hitting against the Angels," Teixeira said, "so I'm sure it's coincidental."
Either way, after singling in the first inning and flying out in the third, Teixeira crushed a two-run triple off the center-field wall in the fifth, giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead and Teixeira an AL-best 111 RBIs. As he left the batter's box, Teixeira seemed to be yelling about something.
"I think Tex thought he would have had a home run if he didn't have the [catcher's] interference," Girardi said.
Teixeira agreed.
"If that ball gets caught," he said, "then I'm really upset."
