John Lackey did not keep his frustration hidden after another playoff loss to the Boston Red Sox.

"It's unfortunate when you get beat on one pitch," the Angels ace said. "Give (Red Sox starter Jon) Lester credit. He pitched a good game. But we've got to find a way to score some runs. It's pretty frustrating when one pitch can cost you the game."

The one pitch that cost Lackey in Game 1 of the American League Division Series was an 0-and-1 fastball to Jason Bay with two outs in the sixth inning. Bay hammered it into the left-field seats to give the Red Sox the lead on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Angels.

"The fact that we're talking about one pitch -- let's be honest," Lackey said. "You've got to give Lester credit. He pitched really well. But we've got to find a way to score runs in the postseason because you're going to be facing good pitching every night."

The Angels haven't figured that out in awhile. With one unearned run in Game 1 Wednesday, the Angels have managed a total of 16 runs in their last nine playoff games -- a five-game loss to the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 American League Championship Series, a three-game sweep by the Red Sox in the first round last fall and Wednesday's loss.

In those nine games, they have batted .190 as a team (55-for-289).

"I don't know nothing about that," said Torii Hunter, a first-year Angel. "Whatever happened in the past happened. We're going to come out on Friday (for Game 2). We intend to win on Friday, I can tell you that.

RED SOX 4, ANGELS 1: The Angels' losing streak in playoff games stretched to eight games (dating to Game 1 of the 2005 ALCS) with another loss to the Boston Red Sox. The Angels have lost 10 consecutive postseason meetings with the Red Sox dating to Game 4 of the 1986 ALCS. They managed nine hits, all singles, off Red Sox LHP Jon Lester and two relievers. A two-run home run by Jason Bay off Angels RHP John Lackey in the sixth inning put the Red Sox in the lead to stay.

--Manager Mike Scioscia started Vladimir Guerrero at DH in Game 1 and indicated Guerrero would fill that role throughout the first-round series. Guerrero has been playing on a balky right knee all season, and Scioscia he wanted to give Guerrero "one less thing to worry about" in the postseason and not ask him to run on the knee defensively.

--C Jeff Mathis will get the start in Game 2. Game 2 starter RHP Ervin Santana had a 14-4 record and 2.88 ERA when pitching to Mathis during the regular season.

--DH Vladimir Guerrero ran the Angels out of a potential rally in the eighth inning. Guerrero singled with one out, and Torii Hunter followed with a blooper over the head of Red Sox 1B Kevin Youkilis. Youkilis couldn't make the play, but Guerrero ran through a stop sign and was easily thrown out at third by Youkilis. "You never know what that inning is going to become," manager Mike Scioscia said. "But, you know, Vlad is aggressive. It was a tough read. It was behind him, and I think he thought the ball was farther out than it was."
