One night after returning to third base for the first time in a week, Chone Figgins was not in the lineup and instead was packing for a trip back to Southern California to have his sore right elbow re-examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum.
Figgins was injured on Sept. 8 when he was hit by a pitch from the Yankees' Carl Pavano. He sat out the next four games, then returned to serve as the DH twice before playing third base Tuesday in Oakland. He had no defensive action to test his arm but came away still bothered by the elbow.
"It's just the soreness not going away," Figgins said. "With ice and things like that, the soreness usually goes away. It hasn't, and I wonder why."
Figgins had X-rays taken after the original injury. He is expected to have another set of X-rays taken Thursday and probably undergo an MRI as well.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the examination was precautionary and that Figgins would rejoin the team in Texas on Friday.
A'S 3, ANGELS 2: The Angels got a two-run home run by Mark Teixeira in the top of the ninth inning to take a lead, but then threw it away in the bottom of the inning.
Oakland's Daric Barton singled, and he advanced to second when Gary Matthews Jr. skipped the throw in from center field and it got by both middle infielders. After a walk, Cliff Pennington faked a bunt, drawing the Angels defense in, then slashed a groundball off home plate. The ball bounced high, and Francisco Rodriguez rushed his throw to first. He threw wildly, and the tying and winning runs scored as the ball bounded into right field.

After clinching their division title a week ago, the Angels really had only one agenda -- get healthy for the playoffs. It hasn't been as easy as it sounds.
