BULLPEN ANALYSIS: Angels manager Mike Scioscia has said this could be the deepest and most versatile bullpen he has had in 10 seasons with the Angels -- despite losing record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez to free agency. The Angels made little or no effort to re-sign Rodriguez, preferring to save money by signing Fuentes to replace him. That move also allowed them to keep setup men Shields and Arredondo in place (rather than pushing one into the closer's role). Oliver has been a solid swingman, used in a more expanded role than situational left-hander, and Jepsen gives the Angels another one of the "power arms" Scioscia likes to have in his bullpen arsenal.

LINEUP ANALYSIS: The last-minute addition of Abreu (signed as a free agent on the eve of spring training) was critical for the Angels, adding two important elements to their lineup -- a left-handed bat with a high on-base percentage. Abreu's addition takes some pressure off young players Kendrick and Morales to make up for the losses of Mark Teixeira and Garret Anderson. If Kendrick stays healthy, he could be a prime factor at the top of the lineup, setting the table for the middle of the order, once again anchored by Guerrero.
