Early in the spring, John Lackey indicated the Angels had until opening day to sign him to a contract extension or the matter would be tabled until next fall, when he can become a free agent.
That stance softened a bit Monday as Lackey opened the season on the disabled list for the second consecutive year.
"Obviously, opening day is not my opening day anymore," Lackey said.
Lackey was cleared to start a throwing program Monday and began by playing catch for approximately 10 minutes during the pregame workout. The Angels are optimistic that he will be able to rejoin their rotation around May 1.
As for the contract talks, they progressed very little after the sides exchanged numbers early in spring. Whether those talks start up again now is not an issue, Lackey said.
