Los Angeles Angels Notes, Quotes 2009-12-14

Los Angeles Angels Notes, Quotes 2009-12-14--RHP Jose Arredondo, who reportedly needs Tommy John surgery after getting hurt in the Dominican Winter League, was non-tendered by the Angels. Arredondo, 25, spent time on the disabled list in June and July because of a strained ligament in his elbow. Arredondo, who would have been eligible for arbitration this winter, was in Class AAA at the time. RHP Dustin Moseley, who had hip surgery in August, and INF Matt Brown were also non-tendered by the Angels.

--With 3B Chone Figgins' signing by the Mariners, the Angels are in line to get two draft picks as compensation -- the Mariners' first-round pick in 2010 (18th overall) and a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds. If the Mariners sign another, higher-rated free agent (like Jason Bay), the Angels would receive their second-round pick instead as well as the supplemental pick.

--Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated that IFs Maicer Izturis and Erick Aybar are the leading candidates to replace Chone Figgins as leadoff hitter. He took Bobby Abreu out of the mix for that spot (though Abreu's high OBP would be valuable there). "I think Bobby brings too much as far as the ability to drive in runs that we would want to take more advantage of that than to just lead him off," Scioscia said.

--The Angels lost two minor league pitchers in the Rule 5 draft -- David Herndon (chosen by the Phillies) and Bobby Cassevah (Athletics). Neither has pitched above Double-A but will have to remain on their new team's major league roster throughout the 2010 season or be offered back to the Angels. Herndon, 24, led the Midwest League with 13 wins in 2007 then was converted to reliever and saved 28 games over the next two seasons.

--Angels GM Tony Reagins said he "conversed" with Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos during the winter meetings but would not comment on reports that the Angels had offered LHP Joe Saunders, SS Erick Aybar and OF prospect Peter Bourjos for Jays RHP Roy Halladay. No player is untouchable, Reagins said, but it would take a "significant package" to get the Angels to trade Aybar.

BY THE NUMBERS: 60-21 -- Angels' record last season in games when Chone Figgins scored at least one run.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You always have a special place in your heart for your first big-league team. ... When you're on the field, you play. But when you're off the field, it's business." -- 3B Chone Figgins on leaving the Angels as a free agent.
