--3B Chone Figgins missed his third game because of a sore right elbow suffered when he was hit by a pitch during Monday's game. Figgins did start throwing and hit in the batting cages before Thursday's game, testing the elbow for the first time since Monday. He is likely to get a couple more days off.
--1B Mark Teixeira missed his second consecutive game while taking antibiotics for an infection. Teixeira said he is "feeling better," and manager Mike Scioscia said he expects him to be available to play on Friday.
--INFs Howie Kendrick and Erick Aybar continued to make progress in their recovery from hamstring injuries. They ran the bases before Thursday's game and "looked very strong," manager Mike Scioscia said. The two could be ready to play as soon as next week; Aybar is likely to return ahead of Kendrick.
--LF Garret Anderson became the first player to appear in 2,000 games as an Angel when he went 2-for-4 in Thursday's game. Anderson is one of only two active players to reach 2,000 games with one team. Going into Thursday, Chipper Jones had played 2,011 games with the Atlanta Braves. Derek Jeter is 27 short of 2,000 with the New York Yankees.
--The Angels will begin setting up their rotation for the playoffs by holding RHP John Lackey out until Tuesday at Oakland. Lackey will have nine days off between starts. RHP Ervin Santana will start Sunday but then get a week off before his next start. The moves align Lackey and Santana to pitch Games 1 and 2 of the Angels' first-round playoff series.
BY THE NUMBERS: 199 -- Career home runs for Mark Teixeira (through Sept. 5). Only one active player had more home runs in his first six seasons (Albert Pujols, 250).
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'll never be happy with this role. We know that. It is what it is." -- OF Gary Matthews Jr., on sharing time this season.
