A year ago, the Angels headed to the annual winter meetings in the thick of their pursuit of free agent Mark Teixeira. Don't look for them to be among the teams chasing super agent Scott Boras' most available client this time around, free agent Matt Holliday. Angels owner Arte Moreno and general manager Tony Reagins have both said the team will not pursue Holliday. "He is not going to be an Angel," Moreno said of Holliday recently.
"I think Arte was pretty clear in his comments," Reagins said as well. "We just don't see that particular player as a fit on our team."
With a declining Vladimir Guerrero likely to leave as a free agent, the Angels would seem to be in the market to replace his run production in the middle of their lineup. Holliday would certainly seem to be a fit in that regard.
But there were hard feelings left among the Angels' front office officials over the way Boras handled the Teixeira negotiations a year ago. Reagins denied that the decision not to pursue Holliday is motivated by any reluctance to deal with Boras again in another high-stakes negotiation.
"That's not going to be a factor in our decision either way," Reagins said. "We have some talented outfielders that we are very happy with. I'll leave it at that."
Reagins did not draw a similar line when asked about another free agent outfielder, Jason Bay, and the Angels could be among his suitors.
