Angels, Yankees work overtime

Angels, Yankees work overtimeThe Yankees and Los Angeles Angels battled each other for 10 innings Saturday night, seemingly dodging the rain that was all around them. And as the clock approached midnight, nothing was settled.

Game Two of the American League Championship Series marched on with the score tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the 11th inning. The contest was not complete in time for this edition. For full coverage, visit buffalonews.com. The Yankees had a 1-0 lead in the series after winning Friday's opener, 4-1.

Game Three is scheduled for Monday at 4:13 p.m. in Angels Stadium with Andy Pettitte pitching for the Yankees against the Angels' Jered Weaver.

The teams spent Friday and most of the day Saturday fretting over a dire forecast of heavy rain that never materialized. There was some brief drizzle an hour before the first pitch and some more starting in the ninth inning but nothing to cause any serious problems with play. Heavier rain started in earnest in the 10th.

The crowd of 49,922 was roaring through most of the game, especially on every two-strike count to Angels hitters. Surely the significance of the game had something to do with that but it was probably the desire to get up and move around to combat the nighttime chill. Game-time temperatures were 47 degrees but dropped steadily and were pierced by a wind

blowing from 15-20 mph.

The Yankees' Alex Rodriguez delivered a line-drive home run to right field off Brian Fuentes to knot the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 11th inning.

A blooper by the Angels' Chone Figgins brought in Gary Matthews for Los Angeles' go-ahead run in the top of the 11th.

The Yankees had a major threat doused in the ninth after Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen retired Mark Teixeira and Rodriguez on grounders.

Hideki Matsui singled to right and was replaced by pinch-runner Freddy Guzman, a speed burner put on the roster for this season for just such a purpose. But Guzman didn't have to steal to advance as Brett Gardner bounced a perfect hit-and-run single to left field to send Guzman to third.

That brought up Robinson Cano with a chance to win it but he couldn't come through as his topper in front of the plate was neatly fielded by catcher Jeff Mathis, who fired to first for the out that plunged the game into extra innings.

The Yankees had a runner at second with one out in the 10th after Angels shortstop Erick Aybar didn't step on second base on what would have been a double play. But Johnny Damon popped out and Mark Teixeira grounded out to end that threat.

After starter A.J. Burnett walked a tightrope through 61/3 innings and the Yankees used their impenetrable bullpen to work the rest of the game. Phil Coke went one-third of an inning and Joba Chamberlain went the next third, striking out Vladimir Guerrero to leave the bases loaded in the seventh.

With Phil Hughes on in the eighth, an error on a routine ball by shortstop Derek Jeter stunned the crowd and put the Angels in position to break a 2-2 tie. The play came with one out and Juan Rivera on first. Macier Izturis' routine hopper never came up on Jeter and he booted it in front of him. He tried to flip to second but it was too late and the Angels had two on.

Hughes struck out pinch hitter Matthews in a three-pitch mismatch of an at-bat and Yankees manager Joe Girardi took no chances as he brought on closer Mariano Rivera.

It took Rivera one pitch to get out of the inning with a soft grounder to Cano. Rivera worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts, but the first out was a sensational diving catch in left by Johnny Damon of a Figgins liner.

The Yankees handed Burnett a 2-0 lead through four innings and he looked ultra-sharp, allowing just one hit in that span.

But in a fifth inning that nearly took a half-hour, Burnett struggled through 33 pitches as the Angels scored twice to tie the game. Izturis' leadoff double set the tone for the frame but Burnett's wildness was the key as he walked a batter, hit another and uncorked a devastating wild pitch that tied the game.

Aybar singled in Izturis with the first run and scored the tying run on a Burnett fastball that landed well short of the plate.
